The advantages and disadvantages of hemp protein

The Russian company Konopel Group of Companies has launched hemp protein under the Konoplin brand on the national market. Employees of the company claim that the product is intended for people involved in sports and leading an active lifestyle.

What is hemp protein?

Hemp protein is a powder made from seeds of technical cannabis varieties, which are included in the State Register of Selection Achievements. Therefore, the Konopel Group of Companies products are legal in Russia.

Benefits of Cannabis Protein

The benefit of hemp protein for a person is due to its composition:

  • 100 grams of product contains 50 grams of protein;
  • energy value reaches 500 kcal;
  • the protein contains 19 amino acids;
  • fiber concentration is 5% (5 grams per 100 grams);
  • low fat content (30%);
  • protein is a source of minerals (magnesium, iron, potassium and zinc);
  • the protein lacks saturated fats and gluten;
  • Protein is a low-allergenic product.

Amino Acids in Hemp Protein

Hemp protein contains a small amount of lysine and leucine. These amino acids are necessary for muscle growth, so protein from peas or brown rice is better for bodybuilders. Hemp protein is inferior to pea and rice in the concentration of most amino acids

Hemp protein deficiencies

The list of the main disadvantages of cannabis protein includes four items:

  1. Poorly digested. The World Health Organization recommends evaluating protein quality based on digestibility. According to this indicator, hemp protein gains from 0.50 to 0.60 points (out of 1.00). In this case, cow’s milk, chicken eggs, whey, and soybeans get 1.00 points on this scale, peas – 0.89, peanuts – 0.87.
  2. The high concentration of antinutrients. Hemp protein contains a large amount of phytic acid, tannins, trypsin inhibitors, and saponins. These substances are included in the list of antinutrients – plant compounds, which reduce the body’s ability to absorb the necessary nutrients from consumed products. Prolonged intake of foods rich in antinutrients causes pain in the gastrointestinal tract and nausea. According to American veterinarians, the concentration of cannabis seeds in livestock feed should not exceed 20%, otherwise, the animals are deficient in nutrients. Therefore, hemp protein must be mixed with other products.
  3. Too much fiber. Excessive fiber intake can lead to constipation, increased gas formation in the intestines and bloating. These side effects of hemp protein are most likely to occur in older people and those suffering from gastrointestinal diseases. For a healthy person, the daily fiber intake is 24 grams.
  4. Perishable product. Hemp protein is rapidly oxidized by contact with air, which increases the concentration of oxidized fatty acids in the product. As a result, protein must be stored in a refrigerator in sealed packaging.

Is hemp protein worth buying?

Hemp protein is inferior to pea and rice in terms of the content of almost all essential amino acids. In addition, cannabis protein is not a complete source of protein, so it cannot be used as the sole protein product. To exclude the possibility of side effects, the protein must be mixed with other foods and not exceed the dosage of fiber. A kilogram of brown rice protein costs 560 rubles more than Konoplin. Given the slight difference in price and a significant difference in terms of amino acid concentration, it is better to choose rice protein for sports.
